Both Raducanu and Kerber were playing as wild cards in Stuttgart, with the Briton tumbling down the rankings after time out to undergo three surgeries. Former world number one Kerber recently returned from 18 months on maternity leave. Raducanu broke Kerber in the opening game and despite a response from the German, the 2021 US Open champion took control and claimed the first set in 41 minutes. Kerber struggled in the second set, and Raducanu delivered an emphatic win.
In Stuttgart, US Open champion Coco Gauff rallied from behind to beat Sachia Vickery. Ons Jabeur snapped a losing streak to defeat Ekaterina Alexandrova after considering withdrawing due to multiple losses. In Rouen, Naomi Osaka’s return to clay was cut short by a defeat to Martina Trevisan in the first round. Like Kerber, Osaka had also recently returned to the tour following maternity leave. In the Oeiras Ladies Open in Portugal, Britain’s Harriet Dart suffered a defeat to home player Matilde Jorge.
